What is Business car leasing

Business leasing or business contract hire is an agreement for a company or business to lease a vehicle for an agreed period of time, which is typically around a few years. The business pays an initial payment, and then fixed monthly payments to use the car over this period. Once this contract comes to an end, the company returns the vehicle to the leasing company, and can choose to renew these on another vehicle, restarting the process.

Benefits of business car leasing

So, why should you choose to lease a company car? Here are a few of the benefits of the business car leasing process:

Cost efficiency

Leasing costs are more affordable than other types of finance, including buying a car outright or car finance.

Flexible business contracts

No depreciation worries

No depreciation worries

There’s no need to be concerned about your car decreasing in value over time; your business won’t own the vehicle, so you won’t lose any money.

How does business car leasing work?

Once you’ve chosen your business lease model, there are a few steps to take before you drive away in your new company car:

Choose your contract length

A shorter contract if you like to change your car more often, or longer for a more affordable lease deal.

Make your initial payment

You’ll need to make an initial payment at the start of your agreement, which is typically a few months’ worth of the fixed monthly payment.

Agree your mileage limits:

You will have to adhere to mileage limits, so you must estimate as closely as possible the amount of miles you’ll typically drive. You will have to pay a charge if you exceed this.

Choose a maintenance package

Choose a maintenance lease to suit you, for services and repairs covered in your fixed monthly payments

Drive away

Your new lease car will be delivered to you, so you can get on the road in no time.

End-of-contract flexibility

Extend, upgrade or end your agreement at the end of your contract, depending on which option suits you best.

So whether you’re handing back your car, extending your lease or choosing a new model, business car leasing gives you the flexibility to drive the perfect company car, without the added expense that comes with buying a car outright.

What happens at the end of a business lease?

When your business lease comes to an end, you’ll need to decide what to do next. Here are a few options:

Return the car at the end of the term. Your car will be inspected in line with Fair Wear and Tear guidelines. Your mileage will also be checked.

You can choose to extend your lease. This is a good option if you don’t want to disrupt your business operations. It also means you’ll have more time to plan your next vehicle, or simply allows you to keep driving a car you love!

You could choose to upgrade to a new lease. Choose a new vehicle, whether that’s a hybrid or electric car, for the latest features and a range of incentives.

Business car leasing FAQs

Want to know more about business car leasing? Find the answer to all your questions with our FAQs below. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, feel free to get in touch, and we’d be happy to help.

Who is eligible for business car leasing?

Business leasing is a good option for sole traders, partnerships and limited companies. To start the process of business leasing, you may be asked to provide proof of trading, company registration, VAR number and evidence of your credit history.

Can employees use a business lease car for personal use?

Yes, but that would then be considered a benefit-in-kind. This means the employee or director of the company would need to pay car tax. If this is important to you, electric and hybrid cars often have lower BiK rates.

What happens if my business exceeds the agreed mileage limit?

If you exceed your mileage limit, you’ll be charged a per-mile excess fee. This can depend on your lease agreement, so it’s important to estimate your company’s mileage as accurately as possible to prevent extra charges.

Can I choose a maintenance package in my business lease?

Yes, you can choose to have your maintenance and repairs covered in your business lease deal, as well as your road tax, for all motoring costs covered in one monthly payment.
