Review: 2014 Mazda 3 Driven

October 25, 2013

It’s not often you are offered the chance to get a sneak peek at anything, whether that’s the latest blockbuster or the newest album by one of your favourite bands. Here at Car leasing made simple car manufacturers are our bands and their latest models are the front men. So, when we were given the opportunity to travel to an undisclosed location in Warwickshire and get a sneek peak at the new Mazda 3 AND be one of the first people in the UK to drive it we couldn’t say yes quick enough! Especially after our excitement at the Mazda 3 reveal info we covered earlier on this year!

What’s the 2014 Mazda 3 Like Inside?

After arriving at the venue and getting stuck in to a delicious lunch we were shown out to the vehicles. We were lucky enough to be treated to both the 120ps 2.0-litre Sport Nav model and the 150ps 2.2-litre Fastback Sport Nav Diesel, that we drove first. When climbing into the Sportback Diesel you immediately notice the cockpit like cabin that wraps around you and presents you with a fantastic driving position. The seats are solid but fantastically comfy at the same time. With the Sport Nav you get keyless ignition so it’s as simple as depressing the clutch and hitting the start button.

Mazda 3 Fastback Right FrontAs the car fires up the 7 inch touch infotainment and navigation screen slowly rises up out of the centre of the dashboard. At the same time the heads up display (H.U.D) flips up above the instrument cluster and glows a fluorescent blue, so bright it was perfectly visible in the intense autumn sun. Between the touch screen and the H.U.D you have all the information you could need at your fingertips, a lot of it can be read with you hardly taking your eyes off the road.

The infotainment system and its functionality is actually one of the most impressive features of an extremely exciting car. Smartphone connectivity is integral to its functionality with it having the ability to send replies to texts via your voice. It can even connect with your social media accounts and read out your latest Facebook notifications to you whilst also sending your verbal replies in text. Alongside that it can connect to Aha!, a digital radio app that gives you access to over 40,000 radio stations at the touch of a button. Interior differences between the regular and Fastback models are limited with the Fastback having slightly more leg room in the rear (although the rear leg room in the regular model is plentiful) and a more expansive boot.

What’s the 2014 Mazda 3 Like to Drive

The 150ps 2.2-litre Fastback Diesel is responsive and yet subtle. Handling is light without being jittery; it feels like you are driving an incredibly sporty car. Gear changes are smooth but satisfying with the stick almost placing itself with some encouragement from your hand. It’s when you put your foot down that you really notice the Fastback’s capabilities though. In any gear but sixth the car pulls considerably when you put the pedal down, this is always accompanied by a satisfyingly guttural roar. However, it’s not just at high speeds that the Fastback shines. Whether you’re going 30mph in 4th or 60mph in 6th the engine is whisper quiet.

Mazda 3 Front LeftIt’s at these times that you also notice the overall refinement level of the car. Road and wind noise is minimal. Even when going over fairly aggressive speed bumps when coming in and out of car parks you notice little noise. Potholes also have little impact. The 2.0-litre petrol model doesn’t have quite as much kick as the diesel and feels a tad less responsive at times but is still a fantastic drive. Refinement and handling is similarly brilliant.

Lease a Mazda 3

So, how much would these models set you back if you wanted to lease a Mazda 3 on its January release date? The 150ps 2.2-litre Fastback Sport Nav Diesel will cost you £240 plus VAT per month to lease from us or £22,000 on the road. The 120ps 2.0-litre Sport Nav will set you back £238 plus VAT per month in a lease or just under £19,900 on the road. We could explain what the cars look like from the outside but we suggest you just take a look at the photos instead.
