Volkswagen have revealed the fourth-generation model of its hugely popular ‘Caddy’ which will go on sale in March.
The Volkswagen Caddy is a very popular light commercial vehicle in the VW range. The current third generation model of VW Caddy has achieved 1.5 million sales recorded around the world during its eleven years in production.
The VW Caddy has been called a rival of the Ford Transit Connect, receiving an aesthetic update, new EU6 compliant engines and new safety and driver assist technology.
Design and Styling
You can instantly notice the updated Caddy model with its new front fascia with a larger grille that is flanked by restyled headlights. The styling changes continue with a new rear bumper, restyled taillights, revised front/rear bumper, a redesigned tailgate and new smooth side pedals. The passenger models also get tinted rear windows.
Interior changes include a new dashboard, updated switchgear borrowed from the more expensive VW passenger car models. It also has a flat-bottomed steering wheel, metallic accents and colour. There are new infotainment and navigation systems available too.
Rather than adopting Volkswagen’s ubiquitous MQB platform, the fourth-gen Caddy is based on a revised version of the previous model’s PQ35 underpinnings, which it shares with the likes of the Beetle, Jetta, Scirocco and Tiguan.
The Caddy engine range is now compliant with EU6 emission regulations, with a new 2.0 litre four-cylinder engine available in three power outputs of 55kw (kilo watt), 75kw and 110kw. VW have introduced a new Caddy Bluemotion model offering an impressive 70 miles per gallon fuel economy.
Some of the Euro5 emission standard diesel engines will remain the same, possibly with a lower price tag.
For the first time, the Volkswagen Caddy comes with a high level of safety and driver assistance systems including city emergency braking which automatically applies brakes to avoid collision. The adaptive cruise control, light assist, driver alert systems, satellite navigation, reverse-view camera, rear-to-kerb parking and semi-automated reverse parallel parking systems are also available.
Pricing and availability
The new Caddy will be launched in Germany at the end of June with orders being taken in March. The UK sales will start soon after. The pricing and specification details will be confirmed prior to release.
